Abstract

The author tells about his creation of a poetic triptych inspired by Jean-Michel Basquiat's paintings, including "Bird of Paradise," "Untitled (Fallen Angel)" and "Riddle Me This, Batman," which all present Black men in flight. He discusses the themes of trinities and African mythology in Basquiat's paintings to process trauma. He shares his realization about Basquiat's notion of the collage form and he refers to the Poet, Black Icarus and the resurrected Basquiat as the myths in the triptych.
