Abstract
The article reviews recent recordings of Sergei Rachmaninoff's All-Night Vigil, op. 37, highlighting three notable interpretations by the Clarion Choir under Steven Fox, the Choir of King's College London under Joseph Fort, and the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir under Paul Hillier. It discusses how these recordings differ in length, inclusion of original Kyiv chants, and their balance between sacred ritual and aesthetic experience. The King's College London recording is noted for its immersive, meditative quality, while the Estonian choir emphasizes liturgical authenticity, and the Clarion Choir remains rooted in musical tradition despite some distractions. The review underscores the work's spiritual depth and the challenge of conveying its prayerful inwardness through performance.
