Abstract

Rod Kedward, a pioneer in the study of the French Resistance in the UK, passed away in April 2023. He challenged the dominant narratives of resistance heroism and conducted "history from below" by interviewing former resisters and utilizing oral history. Kedward's work was groundbreaking, especially at a time when oral history was considered inferior by the historical establishment. He made significant contributions to the field, including his books on the Dreyfus Affair, the French Resistance, and the Maquis. Kedward was also known for his activism, interdisciplinary approach, and mentorship of future historians. His work was well-received in France, and he was honored with awards and distinctions. Kedward's legacy lives on through the Archive of Resistance Testimony at the University of Sussex. [Extracted from the article]
