Abstract

Greta Jones' book, "Doctors for Export: Medical Migration from Ireland c. 1860 to 1960," examines the history of medical migration in Ireland and its impact on physicians, Ireland, and the target countries. The book explores how Irish medical education was structured around the assumption that graduates would seek employment elsewhere, leading to a high number of medical migrants. The primary destination for Irish medical migrants was England and the British services, particularly the Indian Medical Service. However, after the partition of Ireland in 1922, medical migration and professional organization in Irish medicine changed significantly. Irish medical graduates continued to migrate to Britain and the United States, but faced different reactions in each country. The book highlights themes of religious division, career prospects, social status, and financial security, and provides a well-researched and focused analysis of the topic.
