Abstract

The article focuses on the role of German participation in European material reconstruction after the First World War as part of reparations under the Treaty of Versailles and its impact on the political culture of the Weimar Republic. It examines how German political leaders, economic actors, and the public supported plans to send building materials and laborers abroad, despite limited actual implementation and Allied hesitancy. The study highlights the extensive planning, media communication, and public expectations surrounding reconstruction efforts, particularly in northern France, revealing tensions between domestic optimism and international rejection. Ultimately, the article argues that German reconstruction debates illuminate the entanglement of national and international political cultures in postwar Europe and the challenges faced by the Weimar Republic in managing hopes and disappointments linked to reparations.
