Abstract

The article focuses on the history of Palmares, a distinct African community established around 1605 in the Brazilian jungle, where escaped slaves created fortified settlements. Topics include their resistance against Portuguese and Dutch colonial powers until 1694; the significance of Palmares in preserving African culture; and the community's ultimate downfall in 1695 following several Portuguese military expeditions and its enduring legacy as a symbol of hope and refuge.
