Abstract
The article focuses on the 1562 auto-da-fé led by Diego de Landa, a Spanish cleric, in Maní, Yucatán, where he sought to eradicate Maya religious practices. Following the discovery of idols and evidence of idolatry, Landa's campaign resulted in the brutal interrogation and punishment of thousands of Maya, including public humiliation and executions. Archaeological excavations in 2015 uncovered ceramic fragments believed to be remnants of the incensarios destroyed during this event, providing tangible evidence of the cultural destruction inflicted by Landa. The auto-da-fé is portrayed as a pivotal moment in the history of Spanish colonialism, marking a significant shift in the control exerted over the Maya people and their beliefs.
