Abstract

The article reviews *Sabotage in the Arctic: Fate of the Submarine Nautilus* by Stewart B. Nelson, which chronicles the early 20th-century attempt by explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins to reach the North Pole beneath the ice using the submarine Nautilus. The book details the historical context of polar exploration, the modifications made to the former Navy submarine O-12 for Arctic conditions—including the addition of lock-out chambers for diving—and the challenges faced during the expedition, notably the mysterious sabotage that disabled the submarine's diving planes. The narrative also highlights the possible first dive in Arctic waters by Navy diver Frank Crilley and concludes with the 2005 rediscovery and exploration of the Nautilus wreck. This account provides insight into pioneering Arctic submarine exploration and its unresolved mysteries.
