Abstract
Two exhibitions in the Mid-Atlantic region in spring 2024 highlight the artistic contributions of women during the Great Depression. The Art/Work exhibition at the Baltimore Museum of Art focuses on the prints created by women printmakers of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), showcasing their diverse techniques and colors. The Dorothea Lange exhibition at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. explores Lange's powerful portraiture, particularly her ability to capture significant moments in history such as the Great Depression and Japanese internment. Lange's background as a reporter influenced her approach to photography, and her work for the government during the 1930s and WWII is also featured. The exhibition provides a comprehensive view of Lange's work, including her famous photograph "Migrant Mother" and images that address racial oppression and the impact of the Depression on marginalized communities.
