Abstract

Antarctica, which is now a cold desert, was once covered in lush rainforests and inhabited by dinosaurs. Around 200 million years ago, it was part of a supercontinent called Gondwanaland, located near the equator. However, around 34 million years ago, Antarctica froze over and became encased in ice. Deep beneath the ice, there are subglacial lakes, including Lake Vostok, which was discovered in 1993 and contains thousands of species of bacteria. Recently, scientists also found an ancient river beneath the ice in West Antarctica, providing insights into the continent's prehistoric topography. The exact landscape of Antarctica 34 million years ago is still uncertain, but various theories suggest different possibilities. [Extracted from the article]
