Abstract

The article discusses American Civil War iconoclasm and the destruction of Confederate Army-related images and visual objects. Topics explored include the way Union soldiers destroyed portraits and paintings they encountered in Southern households during the war, the motivations behind iconoclasm for Northern soldiers and enslaved people, and the connection between Southern image consumption and Civil War image destruction.
