Abstract
Carolina's Lost Colony: Stuarts Town and the Struggle for Survival in Early South Carolina by Peter Moore is a concise and accessible account of the Scottish settlement of Stuarts Town in colonial southeast North America. The book focuses on the region around Port Royal Sound in modern-day South Carolina and explores the social, cultural, and political worlds of the people living there from the late sixteenth to the end of the seventeenth century. Moore argues that key events, such as the Escamaçu War and the Westo War, set the stage for the Scottish-Yamasee colonization of Port Royal, which ultimately led to significant transformations in the region. While the book lacks in-depth analysis of the motivations of the Scottish colonists and the broader Scottish context, it provides valuable insights into the interactions between the Scots, Yamasee, and other groups in the region. Overall, Carolina's Lost Colony is a worthwhile addition to the study of early modern Scottish transatlantic activity. [Extracted from the article]
