Abstract
The article focuses on the legacy of pianist Moriz Rosenthal (1862–1946), highlighting his polarizing reputation as both a charismatic performer and a controversial figure. Rosenthal's recordings, made late in his career, reveal a blend of charm and personal interpretation, especially in his performances of Chopin's works, though his approach often involved significant alterations to the score. Known for his sharp critical opinions of contemporaries and a belief that piano playing was in decline, Rosenthal exemplified a style rooted in the Romantic tradition that contrasts with modern, more precise but arguably less individualistic performances. Despite debates over his artistic choices, Rosenthal remains a notable and enduring figure in piano history.
