Abstract

The article focuses on Heitor Villa-Lobos's *Rudepoêma*, his largest and most technically demanding solo piano work, composed in the 1920s as a musical portrait of the virtuoso pianist Arthur Rubinstein. Despite its complexity and rich textures, the piece remains outside the standard repertoire, though it has been recorded by numerous pianists over the decades, each offering distinct interpretative approaches. Notable recordings include those by Nelson Freire, Roberto Szidon, Marc-André Hamelin, and Andreas Woyke, with Freire's 1973 version often regarded as a benchmark for its expressive depth and commitment. The article also discusses the work's structure, its challenging performance history, and the varying qualities of available recordings, highlighting *Rudepoêma*'s enduring significance and potential for future reinterpretation.
