Abstract

This article focuses on the concept of FOPO, or fear of people's opinions, and its impact on individual and team performance in both sports and workplace settings. FOPO is described as an anticipatory psychological and physiological response driven by anxiety about others' judgments, which can undermine authenticity, well-being, and effectiveness. The article emphasizes the importance for managers to shift employees' identities from performance-based—dependent on external validation—to purpose-based, where motivation stems from intrinsic meaning and shared team goals. Research cited shows that fostering a purpose-driven culture improves productivity, reduces anxiety, and enhances long-term success. Practical strategies include defining a collective team purpose, aligning individual purposes with it, and consistently reinforcing purpose in everyday interactions to help employees overcome FOPO and perform more sustainably.
