Abstract

This article analyzes a significant shift in women's radio programming at RIAS Berlin (Radio in the American Sector Berlin) during the late 1950s, when the American-led station began advocating for female equality in West Germany. Initially focused on contrasting democratic West Berlin with Communist East Germany and targeting women with household tips and political critiques of the East, RIAS's women's division introduced emancipatory content in 1957, including the soap opera *Gaby and Franz*, which modeled companionate marriage, and the program *Can You Spare 5 Minutes?*, which highlighted legal and economic obstacles to women's full equality. Drawing on preserved scripts, the article shows how these programs encouraged West Berlin women to engage politically and socially with their rights amid ongoing conservative gender norms and incomplete legal reforms. The broadcasts balanced support for traditional roles with calls for emancipation, employing both female and male voices to promote a new gender order while avoiding confrontational feminist rhetoric. This case illustrates how radio served as a medium for advancing women's rights discourse in West Germany well before the late 1960s women's movement.
