Abstract

Susan Civale's thoughtful book offers valuable new perspectives on Romantic women's life writing, afterlives, and literary history. In a fascinating turn, enabled by the book's long nineteenth-century perspective and focus on legacy, Civale introduces the little known figure of Matilda Mary Hays (1820-97), Hays's niece. Through the four deeply researched case studies, it also provokes a rethinking of the career trajectories of Frances Burney (1752-1840), Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-97), Mary Robinson (1757-1800), and Mary Hays (1759-1843).
