Abstract
During World War II, cartoonist Kimon Evan Marengo, known as Kem, led the 'Kem Unit' at the foreign office, creating propaganda to persuade Iran of the threat posed by Nazi Germany and gain Iranian support for the Allies. He produced a series of six miniatures based on the Persian epic Shahnameh, depicting members of the Tripartite Pact and the Grand Alliance re-enacting scenes from the epic. The miniatures portrayed Hitler as the tyrant Zahhak, seduced by Goebbels represented as a demon, with Churchill, Roosevelt, and Stalin foretold as the warriors who would eventually defeat him.
