Abstract

In the rise of the global capitalist economy, the Philippine colonial government localized its monetary system, made up of both silver and gold coins, in the early 1860s. This made the de facto silver currency unstable in the Spanish colonial state in the 1890s and the I Illustrados i (Filipino elites) discussed reforming the currency system; however, such reform was not implemented in the Philippine Revolutionary government.
