Abstract
The article focuses on the life and legacy of Richard Allen, a former slave who gained freedom and became a pioneering African American Methodist preacher in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. After accepting Jesus as his Savior in 1776, Allen overcame discrimination and hardship to preach the Gospel across the Northeastern United States, eventually founding the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1816. Alongside Absalom Jones, he also co-founded the Free African Society in 1787 to support free African Americans and develop community leaders. The article highlights Allen’s faith-driven leadership and his role in advancing religious and social opportunities for African Americans during his time.
