Abstract
This article focuses on the current state and future prospects of third country refugee resettlement as a durable solution to forced displacement. It presents an interdisciplinary examination of resettlement policies and practices, highlighting challenges such as declining resettlement numbers, racialized selection processes, political restrictions, and gaps between policy and lived refugee experiences. The article underscores the roles of diverse actors—including refugees, service providers, diaspora communities, and resettlement agencies—in shaping outcomes and calls for expanded, more inclusive approaches that address structural exclusions and support both formal resettlement and alternative pathways. It concludes that while resettlement remains a critical humanitarian tool, its future depends on political will, solidarity among stakeholders, and reimagining protections beyond traditional nation-state frameworks.
