Abstract

This article focuses on comparing the immunogenicity of two rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) regimens: the intradermal (ID) 2-site, 3-visit Institut Pasteur Cambodge (IPC) regimen and the intramuscular (IM) 1-site, 4-visit 4-dose Essen regimen, both using the Verorab vaccine (Sanofi). Conducted in a rabies-endemic setting with 210 actual bite victims, the study found that both regimens induced comparable neutralizing antibody titers (≥0.5 IU/mL) and similar CD4+ T cell responses by day 28, with the IM group showing a higher frequency of CD8+ T cells. The findings support that the shorter, dose-sparing ID IPC regimen is as effective as the longer IM Essen regimen in eliciting protective immune responses, potentially improving vaccine availability and reducing costs and patient burden in resource-limited settings.
