Abstract

This article discusses a book that compiles the work of Thomas Schilp, a scholar and archivist who focused on the cultural and social significance of commemoration and memory in medieval cities. The book includes thirteen essays that cover a range of topics, from medieval guilds and fraternities to modern attempts to reclaim the Hanse past. The essays showcase Schilp's interdisciplinary analysis of written sources, illuminated manuscripts, and material culture. The book is divided into three sections, focusing on commemoration and memory within political communities, commemoration and civic society, and visual presentation. The volume includes high-quality images that help readers visualize the sources Schilp worked with. This book will be of interest to scholars studying religious and cultural life in medieval Germany, as well as those interested in medieval music, art, and politics. [Extracted from the article]
