Abstract

American prisons clearly influenced Paterson and as well as his visits he read widely about the US penal system and corresponded with criminologists and prison administrators. While for Potter and many others this account will provide hope in the potential of prison reform, for others it will suggest that, if Paterson failed, prison reform is ultimately futile.
