Abstract
This essay offers a close reading of Book Fifth, chapter 4 of The Wings of the Dove. In dialogue with William Empson, I argue that Milly Theale's meditation on the "question of 'living'" draws attention to the ways in which commonplace ideas about "life" break down when subjected to even a small amount of analytic pressure.
