Abstract

The article focuses on the impact of a government shutdown on the U.S. National Park Service (NPS), highlighting that while parks will remain partially open, thousands of NPS employees are expected to be furloughed, leading to closures of staffed facilities and raising safety and environmental concerns. A contingency plan allows access to outdoor areas but closes buildings like visitor centers and monuments, with only essential staff retained for critical functions such as law enforcement and emergency response. Former park officials and conservation groups warn that limited staffing during shutdowns has previously resulted in vandalism, environmental damage, and safety risks to visitors, with potential for similar or worse outcomes if the shutdown continues. The timing of the shutdown during peak visitation and hunting seasons may exacerbate these issues and cause significant economic losses to local communities.
