Abstract

This article is a book review of "Charles Owen O'Conor, the O'Conor Don: landlordism, liberal Catholicism and unionism in nineteenth-century Ireland" by Aidan Enright. The book explores the life of Charles Owen O'Conor, a complex figure in Victorian and Edwardian Ireland who was a liberal Catholic and opposed to home rule. O'Conor Don held prominent positions in society and politics, but became marginalized in the years leading up to his death in 1906. The book delves into O'Conor Don's views on land reform and his identity as a Catholic unionist in a time of increasing polarization in Irish politics. [Extracted from the article]
