Abstract
The article from "All About History" explores the unique perspective of cosmonaut Sergei Krikalev, who witnessed the collapse of the Soviet Union while orbiting the Earth in 1991. Krikalev, a seasoned flight engineer, found himself stranded on the Mir Space Station due to political turmoil on the ground. Despite facing challenges such as economic instability and health risks, Krikalev remained committed to the space program. Eventually, he returned to Earth after spending 311 days in space, marking the end of an era for the Soviet Union and the beginning of a new era of collaboration in space exploration between Russia and the United States.
