Abstract
The article reviews the documentary film *Sun Ra: Do the Impossible*, directed by Christine Turner, which provides a comprehensive and balanced portrayal of Sun Ra, a bandleader, composer, and visionary known for his avant-garde jazz and cosmic philosophy. The film chronicles Sun Ra’s life from his 1914 birth in Birmingham, Alabama, through his musical development, conscientious objection during World War II, and eventual leadership of the Arkestra in Philadelphia. Utilizing interviews, archival footage, and expert commentary, the documentary explores Ra’s musical innovation, intellectual pursuits, and demanding leadership style, while also addressing challenges faced by his band members. The film complements previous works on Sun Ra by offering a structured, accessible narrative that honors both Ra’s self-presentation and factual analysis, making it valuable for both newcomers and enthusiasts.
