Abstract

The article profiles Alfred Fairfax, an African American minister and politician who became the first African American elected to the Kansas House of Representatives, representing the 58th District. Born enslaved in Virginia, Fairfax escaped to freedom in 1862 and served in the Union Army during the Civil War. After moving to Kansas as part of the "Exodusters," he established a successful farm and business before being elected in 1888, where he advocated against racial segregation in schools and discrimination. His election marked a significant moment in Kansas history, as he faced and overcame racial tensions during his political career. [Extracted from the article]
