Abstract

The article "Slow Down: The Degrowth Manifesto" published in the British Journal of Sociology explores the relevance of Karl Marx's ideas in addressing the crises of the 21st century. The author, Kohei Saito, argues that capitalism is the root cause of the global environmental crisis and proposes degrowth communism as an alternative path to an ecologically sound society. Saito's book challenges the notion that capitalism can be reformed and advocates for radical changes to address rising socio-economic inequalities and environmental degradation. However, the book has been criticized for its approach to combining degrowth and capitalism, as well as its lack of emphasis on the role of geopolitics and the nation-state in driving change.
