Abstract
The article explores the reception of Impressionism in twentieth-century China, highlighting the complex and evolving reactions of Chinese artists and scholars to this artistic movement. It discusses how Impressionism entered China via Japan and the subsequent development of modern Chinese art influenced by Western styles. It also mentions the challenge of reconciling foreign influences with the assertion of Chinese artistic identity.
