Abstract

The article focuses on celebrating the centenary of Gramophone, a publication launched in 1923 that has documented the evolution of the recording industry and highlighted notable performers and composers over the past century. It features selected archival reviews and reflections, including Ernest Lough’s 1927 recording of "Oh, for the wings of a dove," Albert Schweitzer’s approach to Bach’s organ works, and Sir Malcolm Sargent’s career as a choral conductor. Additionally, it includes Sir John Barbirolli’s personal thoughts on Elgar’s *The Dream of Gerontius* and an account of the first recording of Britten’s *War Requiem* conducted by the composer. The article illustrates Gramophone’s role in chronicling significant moments and figures in classical music recording history.
