Abstract
The article focuses on the state-level elections of 1800, which resulted in a electoral tie between Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr, and the following 1801 vote in the House of Representatives that broke that tie and chose Jefferson. The author explains that the 1801 election precipitated a constitutional crisis and discusses how the resolution depended on the decision of Delaware Congressman James Ashton Bayard.
