Abstract
This article discusses the book "Russian Colonization of Alaska: From Heyday to Sale, 1818 to 1867" by Andrei Val’terovich Grinev, translated by Richard L. Bland. The book provides a historical narrative of the Russian colonization of Alaska during this time period. It explores the attempts at reform, the activities of naval officers, the decline of the Russian-American Company (RAC), and the lead-up to the sale of Alaska to the United States. The book argues that politarism, a social and economic system in which the government owns the means of production, is the main driver of events during this period. However, the book has been criticized for its problematic use of theory and its lack of modern maps. Despite these issues, the book is considered a valuable resource for scholars of Alaska and Russian America. [Extracted from the article]
