Abstract

The article explains how Nativity art came to include the whole Holy Family with the veneration of Joseph as the protector of Mary and Jesus by the Franciscan followers of St. Francis of Assisi. It provides a history of the establishment of the feast of St. Joseph and the role of the Protestant Reformation in creating the image of Joseph. It considers the painting "The Heavenly and Earthly Trinities" by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo as a representation of the changed portrayal of St. Joseph.
