Abstract
The article examines the current and future challenges to the US dollar’s global dominance, highlighting that while the dollar remains resilient and central to international trade and finance, its foundational strengths are gradually eroding. Former Federal Reserve and Treasury officials Steven Kamin and Mark Sobel express concern over the diminishing credibility of the US government, rising budget deficits, and weakening institutions, which could threaten the dollar’s primacy over the coming decades. Although alternatives like the euro and Chinese yuan face significant structural and political hurdles before they could rival the dollar, former Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson warns of the need for contingency plans to address a potential collapse in demand for US Treasuries. The article situates these concerns amid ongoing global economic uncertainties, including geopolitical conflicts and energy market disruptions. [Extracted from the article]
