Abstract

Antoine Meillet (1866-1936), a great French linguist and an outstanding representative of Indo-European historical-comparative linguistics, is one of the founders of sociolinguistics and the author of many significant works in general linguistics. His research on the Slavonic, Germanic, Latin, Armenian, Old Persian, Tocharian and other language systems is well-known around the world. He elevated Indo-European studies to a new level by enriching them with Old Armenian data and made substantial contributions to the study of languages using the historical-comparative method. Meillet's ideas sparked significant theoretical dehates among twentieth-century linguists regarding the relationship between language evolution and acquisition. A scholar with numerous renowned publications. Antoine Meillet, through his personality and moral authority, established himself as a leading figure in his field. A. Meillet visited Georgia and Armenia from April 29 to August 3, 1891. His letters from Tiflis and Armenia were collected, prefaced, commented on, and published in Vienna in 1987 by Martiros Minassian, a researcher at the University of Geneva. The publication is titled Antoine Meillet: Lettres de Tiflis et d'Arménie, du 29 avril au 3 août 1891 and was presented, annotated, and published by Minassian. A. Meillet's letters from Tiflis and Armenia serve as diaries offering valuable insights into the social, political, cultural issues, human relations, and traditions of the 19th-century Caucasus, including Tbilisi and Yerevan.
