Abstract
This article focuses on the vintage Fender Candy Apple Red finish, highlighting its unique application process and showcasing six guitars from a larger collection set for auction in the UK by Gardiner Houlgate. Candy Apple Red, introduced by Fender in 1963 and inspired by Joe Bailon’s hot-rod “candy” painting technique, differs from other metallic finishes by using a silver or gold base coat with a transparent red overlay to create a distinctive lustre. The featured guitars include models such as a 1966 Jaguar, 1970 Competition Mustang, 1966 Jazzmaster, 1966 Telecaster, and 1966 Stratocaster, each with varying degrees of originality, wear, and refinishing, illustrating the finish’s appeal and the historical context of Fender’s custom colors during the 1960s. The collection reflects both the aesthetic and technical evolution of Fender guitars under different ownership periods, including the CBS takeover in 1965. [Extracted from the article]
