Abstract

For many years in their joint writings, Scanlon and Adlam have championed cantankerous street philosopher Diogenes of Sinope, in his legendry meeting with Alexander the Great, as placeholder for the dynamics Coetzee assigns to Michael and the doctor. Following his discovery by soldiers and transportation to a rehabilitation camp, the inscrutable Michael of J.M. Coetzee's I Life & Times of Michael K i draws the attention of an unnamed medical officer charged with his care. Michael's silences and impassive rejections of food initially fascinate but quicky frustrate, then infuriate, the doctor who becomes increasingly convinced Michael is starving himself to death whilst only he can rescue the misunderstood soul from perishing.
