Abstract

The article provides detailed live reviews of recent opera productions at various festivals, focusing on their artistic direction, staging, and performances. Highlights include a contemporary and controversial staging of Mozart’s *The Marriage of Figaro* by director Kirill Serebrennikov, Scottish Opera’s promenade performance of Stravinsky and Cocteau’s *Oedipus Rex* featuring a community chorus and innovative use of space, and Monteverdi’s *L’incoronazione di Poppea* at The Grange Festival noted for its musical strength but visually confusing staging. The Grange Festival also presented Puccini’s *Tosca* with strong dramatic insight and orchestral support, and Stravinsky’s *The Rake’s Progress*, praised for its elegant direction and vocal performances. Additionally, Buxton International Opera Festival’s production of Verdi’s *Ernani* was recognized for its intense, modern-dress interpretation and energetic execution despite the opera’s challenging themes.
