Abstract
This article focuses on research from the West Pomeranian University of Technology in Szczecin, Poland, examining how genetic and environmental factors, along with training methods, influence the welfare and effectiveness of herding dogs. The study highlights that positive reinforcement, early socialization, and trust-building with handlers improve dogs’ performance, reduce stress-related behaviors, and enhance psychological wellbeing. It also notes that selective breeding has enhanced herding instincts and cognitive abilities while reducing predatory instincts. The research emphasizes that understanding these factors and applying ethical training benefits both herding dogs and livestock by enabling dogs to express their natural behaviors.
