Abstract

Gary Kates' book, "The Books that Made the European Enlightenment: A History in 12 Case Studies," offers a fresh perspective on the Enlightenment by examining the production and reception of ideas during the eighteenth century. Kates draws on Robert Darnton's work but criticizes its narrow focus on the Société typographique de Neuchâtel archive, which excluded other booksellers and publishers and overlooked the role of women in the Enlightenment. Kates takes a broader European perspective and selects case studies that represent the popularization of political thought and writing among a mass reading public. While acknowledging the limitations of a case-study approach, Kates provides a comprehensive history of the Enlightenment period through his diverse selection of books. [Extracted from the article]
