Abstract
The article focuses on the current status and future risks facing the bald eagle, America's national bird, which has recovered from near extinction largely due to the Endangered Species Act (ESA) of 1973. Despite the species' rebound—with over 71,400 nesting pairs today—proposed changes by the Trump Administration to weaken habitat protections under the ESA and reduce funding for National Parks could threaten the bird's habitat and migration support systems. Additionally, climate-related changes and hazards such as electrocution from power lines pose emerging challenges to bald eagle populations. Experts emphasize the importance of maintaining and enhancing protections to ensure the continued survival of this iconic species.
