Abstract
The article focuses on the 1944 painting *Mount Calvary* by African American artist William H. Johnson, depicting a contemporary crucifixion scene that emphasizes emotional relationships rather than historical accuracy. Johnson, born in South Carolina and trained at the National Academy of Design, gained recognition during the Harlem Renaissance after living in Europe and returning to New York. Following the death of his wife in 1944, his health declined, and he ceased painting before dying in a state hospital. Johnson is now regarded as a significant figure in African American art history.
