Abstract

This volume, edited by Othon Anastasakis and Katerina Lagos, offers a comprehensive reassessment of the Greek military dictatorship from 1967 to 1974, integrating diverse disciplinary perspectives including cultural, economic, political, and diplomatic history. It is structured into three parts covering the junta’s historical and ideological background, domestic policies such as economics and education, and external affairs including international relations and the Cyprus crisis. A key theme throughout is the continuity between the dictatorship and preceding political contexts, challenging views of the coup as a complete rupture. The book also examines the regime’s manipulation of institutions like the Church and its contested legacy in Greek collective memory, highlighting the complex interplay between repression, resistance, and political transition.
