Abstract

The article focuses on a recording of two choral works by Carl Reinecke (1824–1910), the oratorio *Belsazar* (1859) and the choral cycle *Sommertagbilder* (1881). Reinecke is described as a composer rooted in the traditions of Mendelssohn and Schumann rather than an innovator, with *Belsazar* presenting a theological dialogue that lacks dramatic vitality, while *Sommertagbilder* offers more engaging orchestral writing alongside choral settings of poetry by Heine and Ruckert. The performances by Leipzig-based ensembles, including the Gewandhaus Choir and Camerata Lipsiensis under Gregor Meyer, are competent but not particularly inspired. The recording, released by CPO, includes detailed notes and translations, making it a valuable resource for those interested in 19th-century choral repertoire. [Extracted from the article]
