Abstract

The article "Utah In Focus" from the Utah Historical Quarterly discusses the polio vaccine trials conducted in Utah in 1954. American physician Jonas Salk developed the first successful polio vaccine, which was tested on 40,000 children in Utah between first and third grades. These children, known as "polio pioneers," participated with parental permission, and the vaccine ultimately led to a significant decrease in polio cases by 1957. Jonas Salk chose not to profit from the vaccine, highlighting the importance of public health initiatives. [Extracted from the article]
