Abstract

This article examines the history of national parks in the United States, specifically focusing on Yosemite and Yellowstone. It highlights the problematic aspects of their creation, including the displacement of Indigenous peoples and the erasure of their history. The author argues that the conservation movement, led by figures like John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt, was influenced by racist views and perpetuated the idea that humans should be excluded from nature. They suggest that a more comprehensive and accurate narrative about the creation of national parks, including the racial and colonial motivations behind them, should be taught in U.S. history classrooms to promote environmental justice.
