Abstract

The article discusses the Allied assault on occupied France on 6 June 1944, focusing on Sword Beach where the British 3rd Infantry Division landed. The beach was well defended, and the British faced significant resistance both on the beach and inland. Despite challenges, the British forces managed to secure a strong presence on the eastern flank of the invasion area, linking up with airborne forces and protecting the beaches from German armor. The battle at Sword Beach was difficult, resulting in around 600 casualties on the beach alone, but it was a key part of the overall success of Operation Neptune. [Extracted from the article]
